The Science of Science Policy

Recent conversations between high level government leaders and Sigma Xi executive officers and staff have resulted in a new direction for Sigma Xi—helping to develop the science behind evaluating, establishing and implementing science policy.

In some cases, well-meaning science policy may have unintended and undesirable effects. Just recently, the European Union implemented rules to boost production of biofuels in an effort to increase use of biofuels by drivers. However, environmental groups highlighted the possible social disruption and rainforest destruction as developing countries respond to the income opportunities. The EU is now rethinking those rules to prevent “harming the poor or damaging the environment” according to Stavros Dimas, EU Commissioner for the Environment. A sound approach to evaluating science policy may help prevent such embarrassments or, worse, actual implementation of flawed policies. (BBC Report on EU policy.)

Sigma Xi believes it is well-placed to take a lead in the development of new approaches to science policy. In particular, the Society will focus on

  • Using the talents of the membership to advance the study, learning, and use of the science of science policy
  • Developing models for decision-makers to practice integrating principles of scientific integrity with science policy

We welcome contributions from anyone interested in participating in this important endeavor.

Water, water, everywhere…

Water is Sigma Xi’s theme for 2008.

From a 2007 survey of close to 7,000 members, we envision Sigma Xi advancing the conversation on critical science issues for every audience: schools, media, legislatures, and academic, government and private institutions.

This blog will provide an outlet for such conversations.

Our critical science issue for 2008 is water: science, policy, ethics. We’re raising awareness through exciting features, resources and events:

  • American Scientist issue dedicated to water issues
  • White papers for legislators, the media and business
  • Blogs and podcasts
  • Discussion points for educators and the public
  • Science film and research poster competitions for students

Our Year of Water, H20’08 will culminate in a themed Annual Meeting in November, in Washington DC.

So what do you think? Do we all agree that globally and regionally, water is a problem? What are the important water issues?

Woo hoo! Our first post!
